make sure they are not inside, adhere chickenwire on top of the chimney to stop them getting in again.
I had this problem many times before. How you handle it depends on the situation and how you feel about them as animals. They do not mean to pester you but it is a problem. I have a wood stove. When they got in and I heard them for a few days, it sounded like they were stuck, so I closed off the other rooms, opened the outside door and had a broom in hand and opened the stove door. The bird quickly came out and flew away. I then hired a local handyman to fix the problem.
All you have to do is put wire on top of the chimney and have it installed properly. This is not expensive and it will keep the birds out. Don't forget to check for nests though and maybe even have your chimney cleaned. Have it checked every year or so to make sure they wire is in place. If the birds get in right after you fixed it and you hired someone to do it, they will come back and repair it at no cost, as long as you have a contract/agreement.
Good luck! :)
Start a fire with dry wood, get it hot, then throw on some wet (fresh) wood. But first, check for nests as they my catch on fire.
