A trick my grand mother uses is keeping a cup of vinegar in the room and it scares them away.
Start screaming
Ugh I am dealing with this now. I have been splattering flies all day for the last two weeks. Try to keep the doors and windows closed. Remove outside garbage and put it far away from the house. Use your garbage disposal if you have one. Good luck,
don't know how this works but it does put water in a ziploc bag and hang it over your door into your house try promice it works
make your house air tight
i dunno about a candle, but if you set up a trap you might avoid them.
place a bit of old ground meat in an old plastic jar with holes in the lid and some water on the bottom. string it up away from your house (because it will stink like all get out and also to send the flies away from your home). the flies will fall in the holes and not be able to fly out. just leave it up all summer, the dead flies will eventually attract other flies better than the ground meat did.
Get the bodies out of the basement!
no need to buy candles, this may sound weird but it really works...take a plastic baggie like a ziplock bag and fill it about half way with water and put a couple of pennied in there and hang it by youre door, this is an old country thing that really works
I bought this thing at Wal-Mart, called a No-Skito....it's a simple design...you plug it in and there's a mini fluorescent bulb that comes on. The flies are attracted to the light, and when they try to land on the slanted surface, they are sucked down onto a screen by a fan that is under the screen.

They can't escape after that....when the little trap fills up, you discard the fly bodies into the trash....or outside to feed the birds.

It has worked wonders for me. Also, sometimes I spray them out of the air with soapy water in a spray container.
try putting bunch's of mint in your rooms, they don't like the smell and mosquito's don't either,
Certain essentiall oils will keep them out. I think mostly citrus oils? Buy an incense burner and a guide to essential oils and away you go. You should also make sure all bins and sealed and food put away so as not to attract them.
You're thinking of a Citronella candle which produces a scent that repels insects. You can get them nearly anywhere in the summertime. Check out the camping section of any Target, Walmart, REI sort of store.

I just bought tiki torches to light by my sliding glass door at night; they are fueled by a citronella oil, so bugs stay away from the door.
There is this interesting web site that I copied below, they have some interesting facts, it shows a bag of water in a zip-loc bag hanging by the door, I know outdoor cafes have used this and they claim it works.
We found that finally burying our grandfather cleared up the problem pretty quickly.
A Rue [rhue] plant in a pot is very effective. [also known as pyrithrin I think]
you can buy fly strips from diy stores hang them around the place it may not get rid of them but it kills the suckers
