How can you prevent cats from crapping on the lawn?

I have been given two solutions from friends but want your thoughts.
1) fill a plastic bottle with half vinegar and half water. cap it and put it on the lawn.
2) same as (1) but use bleach instead of vinegar.

But why should bottles be closed and not be punctured to let out the smell?

MOTH BALLS OR MOTH CRYSTALS - sprinkle a little on the lawn or in the surrounding flower beds - cats won't come near it - works every time

I was told you can sprinkle pepper on your lawn and the cats won't use the bathroom on it. but I don't know how true it is.
just give them a litter box and all will go well
