What is the cutoff for a housewarming party?

My fiancee and I just moved into our new home, but we want to do a lot of work to fix up the place. We want to have a housewarming party, but we don't want to do it right now, b/c the house needs a lot of fixing. We both work, so it's difficult to do large amounts of work at a time. How long is too long to wait to have the housewarming?

Answers:
send out a note to the ones you would invite and tell them the good news and would like to invite them to a post poned party. i know they will understand. in fact take pictures of befor and after for the party so they can see......
have fun and congrats on the new house

I would think anything over a year would be too long. But if your friends know that it's a work in progress, you might be able to get a few more months.
I suckered my friends into painting one time by "claiming" to have a party. Handed everyone a brush upon arrival, had the house panited in less than 4 hours. Cost about $150 for pizza and beer (which we drank AFTER the painting was done). Still friends with them ;-)
