I use some products from a company called Melaleuca. Believe it or not I use their laundry prespot and it works great. I even use their Tough and Tender and Lemon Brite on my children's sand box and and this keeps the ants away.
Ants despise mint--I grow it in my garden and clip it and put it where the ants are . It has many purposes and getting rid of ants is one my favorites--
Depends on whether you consider Boric Acid a pesticide. Boric Acid is the active ingredient in most ant powder, it has a low toxicity, and it's inexpensive. Because it has been around for years there is a good body of knowledge about it. One very thorough report on its toxicity at the referenced URL. Of course, the quantity ingested would make a big difference, but small amounts seem to be of no consequence.
