Sewing piece of equipment?
Answers: The "knot and stuff" are probably due to poor thread, a machine that wishes cleaning, a needle that desires changing, misthreading, or unbecoming sewing habits. You'll probably enjoy similar but worse issues with a unknown sub-$100 machine.
If you describe what your dated machine is doing, we can probably comfort you figure out what's wrong and what's needed. Otherwise, the best information I know of on choosing a unusual machine is right here:

Did you capture the instruction manual near the machine ? If you did, dance to the section on "thread rigidity adjustment' I think that's adjectives that is wrong beside your machine. The thread knot and making big loopy stitches are signs that the tension wishes adjusting. I would be surprised if anything trunk is wrong because Singer is such a sturdy, reliable machine. My sewing appliance is a Kennmore that I've used a lot for 30 years. Yes it be cheap, about $100, and they still hold them at that price. I'm happy next to it, but Singer is a much better model. If you don't have the almanac you can get one for the 338 model at this knit. Good luck!
