how do i safely get rid of rats? Keep in mind that I have a 2 year old toddler who gets into everything.?

It may sound weird, but peppermint oil on a cotton ball put over your home. Plus it will make your house smell good.

You may be limited to the Have a heart traps due to the kid--I have three teen boys so I recall those days. People without feisty boys don't understand the extent of how quickly thoroughly a two year old can get into trouble (in less than the amount of time it takes mom to run to the bathroom!)

Been where you are. My then 5 year old picked up a dead rat outside and went looking for someone to make it better. She knew it was a critter, with no understanding that not all critters are good. With young children traps are out of the question. Traps could break little fingers and worse if they'd pick one up with a rat in it. I'd go with Decon or other poison and make sure the bait is set out in places where you are 100% sure little hands aren't going to go. Behind the refrigerator, under the stove, etc. Check daily to be sure they are eating. You might have to move it to find where they are actively running. Do this quickly, rats have been known to crawl in bed with you and bite.
They have live catch traps you set up where the children dont go bait with aplle & peanut butter & that gets them then you can let them go or have some one do it for you....
