What can I spray on my basil plant to keep the bugs from killing it and to help it grow?

I bought a basil plant and kept in on the patio for a while and it did okay, but I know it was not getting enough sunlight. When I put it outside, it started to do better, but then some bugs got to it and it's dying. I bought a new one, and I want to know what I can spray on it to keep the bugs away, but that also will not be harmful to me since I will be adding it to my food.
Thanks.

For the bugs I suggest mixing some dish washing liquid (Palmolive or something) with some water in a spray bottle. It is a safe cheap way to keep bugs off of plants, I do it all the time.
In regards to growing, you can get some fertilizer for fruits and veggies, those are good for plants you plan on eating, just remember to wash it really well. Of course, plants like basil usually don't need fertilizer as long as you water them.
Good luck!

I believe there is something you can make from tobacco juice, listerine and dish soap that you can spray on all your plants to prevent bugs from eating them. You can also plant garlic near it.
