RID X will work, but a cheaper alternative is dry yeast 1 packet a month. Was suggested to me by a septic tank servicer.

I think if you have an odor strong enough to make you ask this question you have more serious problems than an odor. But First I would have the tank pumped. Second you'll need to get the system inspected to determine what caused the stink. It may be your leaching field. Either way start with the pumping of yuor tank. Then take it from there.
Have a plumber come out & check your system. You may find you have a tree root problem. If so, have those removed, That should solve your problem.
Also remember to use Rid X once a month. It really does the job.

You may have an obstructed vent and the odor may be coming through the roof vent. If your drains are flowing normally you might try putting yeast or sour milk down the closest toilet to the tank and giving it a few days. If you have a garbage disposal quit using it at least for now and forever is better. Never flush a cigarette butt down the toilet. If you have water standing anywhere in the yard it is time to call in the experts. You could either have a blocked field line or your tank needs pumping.

You did not state if this is an aerobic system or not. With aerobic systems, if your air compressor is not working or the air distribution is plugged then you will have an odor.
