I have a two story home with a single central A. C. unit. Is it possible to install a second central unit?
Answers:
Yes- Assuming you want the 2nd unit upstairs, you will need a Closet or space for the Air Handler, you can run the ducts (insulated) in the Attic, or build a Furdown in the Hall- you will need to run, 220 for Heat or a Gas line depending on the Heat source, also the Freon Lines, and Coil drip Line to a Sewer connection.
You could also set the Unit next to the Existing and move the Duct work to the new one that you want split off. But you will need a way to get the Cold Air return connected from the split off area.
Other answers:
Only if you install another "blower unit", or "climate changer"...
Your furnace has one "A-frame" in it from the first A/C. You can not put another one in it...
So, you have to build a plenum, put your A-frame in there fom the second A/C then run duct work to the rooms and returns from the same rooms to the plenum. Obtain another "squirrel cage" with motor to move the air...
OR, for the rooms that are "upstairs", (now this is only using the "one A/C unit), get some small fans that will fit in your "duct work", and wire them to the furnace motor, so that when it kicks on, your A/C will be 'forced' upstairs more, and cool the rooms off...
BUT, your best bet, is insulate the attic, as you probably dont have enough insulation up there and the heat is coming down, directly into the rooms!
Now, the fan is cheapest.
Insulation is the next cheapest and will pay for itself in a few years from heat savings too.
Building a plenum, installing a new A/C will cost you a small fortune, where as you can insulate the entire house, for that price...And probably install new double pane windows too!
I wish you well..
