Why do posters shrink in the winter and expand in the summer?

Hello,

I will put up a poster in the fall and it will not have any wrinkles in it or anything. The poster surface will be smooth and against the wall.

When spring and summer hits the poster will no longer be smooth. It appears that the poster has expanded as certain parts will stick out.

Why is the poster shrinking and expanding?

Furthermore, why is it only doing this where I am currently going to college in North Dakota? (a friend stated that they had the same experiences).

Thank you for your help!

Because temperatures do weird things to materials. Heat makes things expand and the cold makes things contract...I attached a link that explains it a little better than me.

I would think that you are probably placing the poster on a wall that faces the outside of the building. Usually, if the structure is older it will not have adequate insulation. As the temperature changes outside, it will affect that wall, and thus your posters will expand or contract accordingly. Just move it to an inside wall & see if it helps.

I would think that a person going to colledge would be more smarter than that .
Posters are wood products. Pulp is from wood as paper is its byproduct...

Wood, as every woodworker knows, expands and contracts, it "moves"... So, as the paper expands with the moisture it absorbs in the Spring, and dehydrates due to lack of moisture in the winter, then you will have the expansion and contraction...

I wish you well..

well in the winter,,things seem to shrink from the cold, guess from the freezing,,and in the summer things have more moisture, they expand,,outgrow,,also more humidity,,I grew up there,,yup yup
ummm. who cares? buy a new one or frame it or something.
PHYSICS MAJOR? NO : )

'LL ASSUME YOU'RE A LIBERAL ARTS MAJOR. SIMPLY,

HEAT EXPANDS STUFF; (SPEEDS UP MOLECULES)

COLD CONTRACTS STUFF (SLOWS MOLECULES)
