I want to try and grow an avocado plant any sucess stories?
Answers:
I took an avocado pit, stuck 3 toothpicks in it, and set it in a cup of water. It grew roots and leaves, so I potted it. Eventually it grew to about 3 feet tall, before I gave it away because I had to move. I should try another one. It never gave fruit, though. So is that a sucess, or not?
For those of you who tried and failed to get roots, maybe the pit was just upside down.

How about failure stories?
I live in Southern California. I planted an avocado seed from a fruit purchased at the supermarket. The plant was beautiful, and lived about 10 years, at its maximum height it was about eight feet tall. It never bore fruit, and had blossoms only one year.
During some summers, the leaves would dry out -- as if they were sunburned.
Back when I was a hippy, everybody had an avocado seed stuck in the top of a bottle with toothpicks. Mine never did anything. Other people grew enormous vines, but no one ever harvested an avocado.
