What's scratching around in my attic at night? Is it a bird or a rat?

It could be a squirrel, I had those in my house before we bought our new one. They are a pain in the butt!!
Why don't you get a flashlight, and go have a look?

Most likely it is a rat or a squirrel. Squirrels are the hardest to get rid of. My mother is still trying to get hers out of her Attic, this is like 7 months now.
Its probably mice. They come out in the attic at night when its cooler
if it's scratching, it's probably a squirrel. you need to find the hole it keeps getting into and plug it.

Rats are nocturnal in nature, perfering the dark over the light for thier forays..
Squirrels are not as nocturnal in nature though.

yea either a rat or squirrel. toss some rat poison and moth balls in attic to get rid of them.
