PROBLEM: Green Floating Algae
ANALYSIS:
Algae growth is usually caused by one of the following conditions:
Inadequate Free Available Chlorine Levels. Free available chlorine levels can be depleted quickly by heavy rains, high bather loads or poor maintenance procedures. During such conditions, check free available chlorine levels frequently and add an AquaChem sanitizer as needed, according to label instructions.
High pH. Alkaline water prevents chlorine from effectively killing algae. AquaChem pH Decreaser used as directed on the label will lower pH to the correct level of 7.2-7.6.
Dirty Pool Surfaces. Dirt and slime accumulation on pool surfaces provides the perfect location for algae problems to start. Weekly brushing and vacuuming eliminate this source of trouble.
SOLUTION: AquaChem Algaecide Plus or Black Out
Check filtration and circulation systems for malfunctions.
Check the pH and adjust (if necessary) to 7.2 — 7.6.
Following label directions, add AquaChem Algaecide Plus (for all pool types) or Black Out (for white plaster pools).
Allow algaecide to work overnight. Then brush and vacuum pool surfaces. Backwash the filter to remove accumulations of dead algae and debris.
For major infestations, a second treatment may be needed.
Return to normal maintenance with AquaChem sanitizers, shock products and balancers.
As an algae preventative, add AquaChem Algaecide Plus or Algaecide Concentrate 60% per label directions as listed for preventative maintenance.

You need to shock it with chlorine AND copper. There's a product called Bioguard Spot Kill.
If you already have algae in your pool, then you will have to add both a biocide and pool shock. Your local pool supplier can provide both or you can go Home Depot or Walmart. You will use much larger amounts of pool shock than you normally do. If for instance your pool is 20,000 gallons, you will probably add 10 pounds of pool shock along with the biocide. Be sure to throw all your pool tools and toys into the water as well, because they will be contaminated with the algae bacteria.
Then run your pool filter until the system clears. You will have to brush the side and bottom to be sure to get all the algae killed.
Once your pool has cleared, you will then need to backwash the filters to clear out the algae filtrate.
In the future keep your chlorine level high....at least 5 ppm. I keep mine close to 10 ppm all the time. And don't worry....it's not chlorine that makes yours eyes get irritated. It's pH of the pool water that stings your eyes.
