What is in soil that makes a plant grow?

Answers:
A little ecological background first:
For all living beings there exist ecological factors: things or conditions that are necessary for their existence. Usually, one or few of these ecological factors are naturally scarce and act as restraints to their growth, development and/or reproduction: these are called limiting factors.
For plants, the most common limiting factors are phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N) and potassium (K). This means that even if the plant has all the other things it needs to grow (carbon dioxide, sunlight, water, other elements), if these elements are scarce or lacking, it won't grow normally. These nutrients are present in the soil, thanks to the activity of many microorganisms that reconvert organic remains from animals and plants into inorganic elements and salts (phosphates, nitrates, nitrites, etc.). (They're also added as fertilizers).

What does the plant need these for? Basically, to synthesize its proteins and other biomolecules that form their bodies (the basic carbohydrates are synthesized from the CO2 in the air).

Nutrients and Minerals
Manure, dead things that die and leave nitrogen in the ground which is then sucked up the ground.
Primarily nitrogen. But many other factors all contribute ranging from other nutrients to simple things like moisture saturation (soil can 'hold' water while the plant absorbs it).
CALCIUM CHLORIDE CaCl2; FERRIC SULFATE FE2(SO4)3; FERROUS CHLORIDE FeCl2; MAGNESIUM SULFATE MgSO4
Sulphurates and carbonates. They take them in through the roots in a process known as diffusion.
its not the soil its the seed. i did a project in my 5th grade
i put a seed on a bounty paper towel and watered it and put it near the window and it turned into a plant. but its best to put it on soil to make it heathyier.
chemicals the plant requires ,and it also secretes chemicals in it ,that other plants use .
the soil also retain water
