why, when growing your own tomatoes, they split when they ripen?

I live in the Dallas/Ft Worth area

Answers:
It is a watering issue. The splitting of the tomatoes is an indication of inconsistent watering. Allowing the plant to get too dry, then over watering. I would suggest watering them the same amount, every third day. Increase the watering to every other day during extreme hot conditions like the Midwest is currently experiencing, but water the same amount.

Other answers:
You are giving them too much water or you are watering them erratically.
