i locked myself out of my house - how do i pick the lock?

Call a lock smith. or if you have sliding windows (the old kind) you can push the window up and slide it back. IF all else fails, a rock through the window should work.

Assuming you either have telepathic ability and are able to type from outside you home, OR you have a laptop..here's what you do..
It all depends on what kind of door you have..working at the lock with a credit card works for me! Just stick like a card into the door where the little lock thing that keeps the door SHUT is. Move the card around and try to push it back into the door. Also push while you are doing this. You might have a specific kind of lock which may make this useless. Good luck.
If it's a deadbolt, find an open window or call a locksmith. If it's not a deadbolt: get a butterknife and slide it between the door frame and the wood trim next to the lock, the door will pop open. Please only break into your own home.
this one is easy and cheap use your credit card slide it in where the latch and door meet i have used this one myself with great success i learned this one off the TV it works most of the time except on deadbolts.
