Trim any trees or bushes that are touching the deck or house. I have heard also that bay leaves repell them. If they are carpenter ants, they are gonna eat your deck. The only sure way to get rid of ants is FIND THE NEST and KILL THEM ALL :D Via whatever method you come up with. I don't know if they're all in at night, but if they are, and you know where the nest is, some BIG pots of boiling hot water do wonders on them. We got rid of ground nests of hornets this way.
