Sure, you can buy a home. I just did. I have not so great credit, and filed bankruptcy a year ago. Go to a lending agency to find out how much you can be approved for, find a home a lil under that price, after you do that, see if you can be approved for an FHA loan. When we bought our home in may 2006 we only had to come up with $500. We got a wonderful home, may need a lil fixen, but its livable, and looks nice. Just needs paint, and maybe new windows, but other that that its cool.
There are all kinds of government grants and things you can get if you r a first time home buyer. See if there is a Country Wide Lender in your state. They can help you finance and get the FHA loan. There r also other lenders that can help you with all that also. I know I never thought I would own My own home, but look at me now. It can happen.

You could check out Fannie Mae, they have down payment assistances. Most banks have programs that will help out with your down payment you could check with them. You could the rent with option to buy through a real estate company. Or check out the foreclosure and HUD selling list and bid on the properties. You could go to foreclosures on line and check out your state listings. In additional, you may want to check out Habitat for Humanity, they sell homes also
there are all kinds of federal,state and local programs to investigate.your local HUD,housing and urban developement,is a great place to start.also look into farmers home loans.it is where a group of people build there own and others in the goup houses.you trade the labor for the down payment and a low interest loan.habitat for humanity is another program that you may want to look at.just be persistant and things will start to open up for you.creative thinking is also helpful.i just read of a guy that started with a paper clip and traded up until he was able to trade for a house.he trded the paper clip for a pen,the pen for a knife,the knife for a flashlight,untill a year later ,thru some pr work on the internet, he was able to trade for a house in canada.so there are ways.good luck
