When is an eggplant in a garden ready to pick from the garden?

I have several eggplants in my garden and I don't know at what point they would be consider big enough to pick, or if they are ready to be picked if they are only about six inches.

Answers:
Eggplants aren't fussy. When they're a size you like, pick 'em.

Eggplants picked on the small side tend to be tender & delicious.

Other answers:
You should gently squeeze it. If it is hard, it is not yet ripe. Once the eggplant is tender to the touch, it is ready.
