What is the best way to get rid of carpenter ants?

Answers:
I'm fond of the tried and true method... diazinon the Hell out of the main nest and then any of their nests in the surrounding area that you're aware of. It's cheap, and very effective in killing them off. Diazinon comes both in granular form and in a 12.5% liquid concentration form, and is readily available in hardware stores, home and garden stores, or even at your local Wal-Mart.

Just be careful to follow directions and safety precautions given on the product, and don't ingest any of it, since diazinon isn't picky about what it kills and is more than capable of causing permanent injury and death in humans (and all of its effects are painful in the extreme).

I was told one way to get rid of ants it to sprinkle uncooked rice around your house, or around the location you think they are nesting. Evidently, the ants will take the grain to the queen bee, she will ingest the rice, swell up, and die. Hence, avoiding the situation of her producing more ants. Also, the worker bees will eat them and die. I have never tried it, but I have heard that it works.
First make sure there's no sources of water or wetness in the house from leaking roofs and pipes etc., then find their nests in the house and exterminate them. Carpenter ants don't need a continuous path to the soil like most termites do, so exterminating their local nests outside the house won't get rid of the nests inside your house.
