How do you make a freestanding watering system for a planter.?

I was told you could use plumbing pipes and attach a sprinkler head on top facing down, is this true?

Answers:
You can do it with 1/2" PVC pipe but you need to support the piping because it bends. You can also drill holes along the pipe and put it horizontally over the plants and can work as a sprinkler. Simply adapt a hose connector in one end and a tap in the other end.

Copper tubing is better but you need to do some soldering. It's more expensive but is more durable.
