What are these tiny hopping bugs that have invaded my house?
Answers:
Yes, it definately sounds like fleas to me too, and you don't have to have pets to get them. They can ride in on your pantleg as easily as a pet. A good indication that these are indeed fleas would be small, pimple-like bites that itch like hell. You can get them anywhere but they usually happen around the ankles or sock-line.
For the yard, if you have a severe flea problem and need a quick fix, use a pyrethrin, not a pyrethroid. Wait 24 hours and then treat the yard with a long-term flea control, such as nematodes. Wet the yard first. Apply the first treatment to kill eggs and larvae, and then in 5-7 days apply a second treatment to kill adults. The nematodes keep on working for up to 2 years depending of how much you water the yard and how hot summertime gets. The nematodes also knock out fire ants.
For controlling fleas in the house, the best and safest products are 20 Mule Team Borax mixed with a small amount of rosemary or eucalyptus oil. Shake over the floor or carpet and let it stay as long as you can stand the dust. Vacuum up the powder and toss the vacuum bag. To get rid of the unhatched eggs repeat vacuuming for one week.
Flea Busters cut out all the mixing and gives you a borax with a lot less dust.
Diatomaceous Earth is a pure organic product that can be used in the house.
And last, Pure Natural Citrus Spray can be used directly on pet bedding, carpets, floors, furniture, and around the outdoors.
If all else fails, or this sounds like too much work, call a professional.
