what do I need to build a koi pond?

Answers:
The geniuses that come before me are right...water, and fish. But I'm sure that helps you out tremendously lol. I used to work at petsmart, so I can get you in the right direction, But i don't remember everything. So i'd recomend finding the nearest petsmart location and calling them, they're required to answer all phone questions (sucks for us, but good for you).

First thing to remember...KOI GET BIG!
Plan out how much space you have or want and what type of pond you want. If you want a hole in the ground with water, that's not to hard to do. Dig the hole, LINE IT WITH SOMETHING PLASTIC and fill it with water. If you want above ground then BUILD something to keep the shape (similar to an above ground pool) and then agian, line it with something strong. You can buy liners at any petsmart, tractor supply co, or outdoors type store.
Make sure you buy a good filtration system. Ponds will get very gross if they aren't filtered. It'd be like sitting a steak in the sun for the summer...it isn't going to be so pretty come september.
Fish wise, just make sure you don't overload the pond. Rough estimate for a full grown koi (3ft long) is 90 gallons per fish.

One more important thing to remember...RESEARCH. Learn as much as you can abuot feeding and winterizing. Those are the two most important things you need to know about. Koi can be frozen in a pond over the winter, but they have to be big enough to sustain themselves that long (usually about 1 foot in length is a good bet). Hope that helps...call petsmart for details

Remember, they eat plants.
Goldfish do not.
You need a good filter, one big enough for however many gallons of water and a pump to go with it plus the tubing, it is also good to get a UV light filter to help cut down on algae and an aerator. You will also need some Pond Start it removes the chlorine from the water. When you buy your fish you don't have to buy the real big expensive ones they get to a pretty decent size in about a year.Just know it is a lot of work!!Lot's of up-keep. Mine is great, my fish will even eat cat food from my hand.Good luck!!
