Humane traps can catch more than one mouse at at time, but the old fashioned snap traps do work and are fairly inexpensive.
a sticky trap, they get stuck on it and stay there til they die - be careful though its very sticky you'll have a tough time removing shoes and socks if they get stuck.

Glue Traps
Dcon is the best hands down, but the mouse can die in the house. Put a source of water near where the mouse is entering the house along with the Dcon. That way he is more likely to stay outside.
glue traps in stratigic places, like where they come out...
Tomcat.

Or fill up a 5 gallon bucket with water 1/2-way. Put dry dog food in the bucket. It will float in the water. Rat, or mouse, will dive in after the dog food and drown trying to get back out.
umm we used to have a mice problem at our old house..and we had traps everywhere with peanut butter and they would just come get the peanut butter off and then go away...the traps didn't work...so my mom bought d-con...you set that out and they come to eat it...it explodes their stomach and then they die..slowly but they die...then you just have to throw them out...it worked for us...
Cat or ferret
Catch the mouse alive. Use the cage type trap to catch the mouse. I don't think killing any form of life is a solution to any prob. Just catch him alive and leave him somewhere far from your home. (Your school maybe, lol)
The old fashioned spring wire trap is still the best. Bait it with a peanut, peanut product and /or with chocolate the combo is particularly effective We tape the peanut to the trap because some vermin are able to snatch the bait without being caught if it is not securely attached.
You can make a bucket trap. Take a five gallon plastic bucket. Cut a wire clothes hanger so that a piece will just fit inside the top (across the bucket) when you bend it a little. Now take an empty soda can. Punch a hole in the center of the bottom and the center of the top. Put the wire through. The can will spin on the wire. Use peanut butter to paint a line around the middle of the can, halfway between the top and bottom (like an equator). Then fit the wire into the bucket, bending it slightly to fit.

The wire will bow slightly and the can will slide to the middle of the wire. The can is free to spin around the wire. Set it next to something the mice can climb up.

The mouse will smell the peanut butter, climb up and walk out on the wire like a tightrope. Then he will climb up onto the can to get at the peanut butter. But, because the can is free to spin, it will flip over from the mouse's weight and dump him in the bucket!

It is up to you what to do with him after that. Don't tip the bucket, and don't reach in after him. (If he doesn't bite you and give you some infection, he will just run up your arm and get away.)
The plain old spring trap. Bait it with flour or peanut butter.
I also agree that the old-fashoned spring traps and peanut butter are good. Plunk a piece of nut or bird-seed in the peanut butter, too. You may have to adjust the sensitivity of the trap by bending the piece of metal that holds the wire. Sometimes it has too much depth and the bait will get eaten without the trap going off.the worst outcome.
