is being part of a home owners association a good thing, can they tell me what i can put on my property?

Answers:
Some people like the regiment, and protection of their home value, but if you desire more freedom then don't buy a property where joining an association is mandatory.

Other answers:
NO!

If at all possible buy something WITHOUT HOA, you'll be glad you did. The outside of the complex essentially is not yours, they are a PIA to deal with, etc, etc...

not a good idea. they can tell you what color drapes you can have. when you can put your trash out and lots of other bullshit
you bet they can. they made someone get rid of a big bird playhouse in a back yard because the rule was no red and its plastic roof was red. they can tell you anything they want, read all the rules verrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyy carefully and if you dont like the rules dont buy. plus you have to pay them every month or every year to run this group that tells you what to do. what colors you can paint, how far back your shrubs can be, how tall they are allowed to be, how much noise you can make, if you can cook outside. and on and on
NOT a good thing! They'll tell you what you can and can't do with your own home and make you pay them to do it. Vote it down NOW and spare no effort in doing so!
