How many roof tiles per square metre, Quality and costs!?
I am trying to decide on what tiles I want to use to cover my roof, but the problem is tiles come by the thousand rather than by the square metre it would seem! For traditional grey slate (400mm by 200mm) I have been given a cost of £685 per thousand, but the problem is I don't know what the overlap should be of the tiles on a 40 degree pitch gable ended roof. The roof sits on a rectangular footprint of 10.5 metres by 7.6 metres with 300mm roof overhang.
Can anyone advise as to how to calculate the area that tiles will cover if their size is known - what are the factors?
Also, I understood traditional grey slate to be very expensive, but it seems cheaper than concrete alternatives? Does this mean there is a quality issue - what aspects should I consider regarding quality and cost?
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Answers:
Grey slate is very expensive. Concrete is cheaper and works just as well. The difference is purely cosmetic. Delabole slate is extortionate, second hand cornish slate looks great, but is also expensive. Spanish slate is cheaper.
Cna't help with the calcs I'm afriad.
