Why do freezers have that horrible distinctive smell? What causes it?

Answers:
I agree that it is dirty and the smell is caused from bacteria/ old food.

Baking soda or something similar will mask the smell, but not eliminate it.

Removing everything and cleaning it thoroughly will take care of the problem. Don't forget to clean around the door gasket, as well as in the back of or under any shelves.

Remember: It didn't smell like that when it was new, did it?
