How many houseplants does it take to actually change the quality of air in a small home?

I'm not sure "how many" growing up my mom always had plants through out our house, and I would get compliments all the time. The house seemed to smell good (even though we had cats) and the house was always cozy! People would say it would calm them down to be in our house... there is a good reason to buy more plants!

Good healthy plants keep the air from becoming stagnat. Just like water in a pond, almost any exchange of water will keep the pond from becoming stagnant. How many will it take for you to notice the difference? That depends on you ann the scale of the problem.

i would say 4
A Hepa filter would be more effective. Plants just produce more oxygen the do not remove Toxins.
literally hundreds. Placing a few plants arounf your home will do NOTHING to improve the air in your home. You be better off buying a dehumidifier.

it depends on the plant. basil plants smell very strong. id say 3 or 4 plants keep the air smelling clean

I don't know about houseplants, I'm not a botanist; however, I am a chemical engineer. As a chemical engineer I know all about quality of air being effected by chemicals. So, if your worried about the air you breathing first look at what your using to clean your house. I did a study on air quality in the area where I live a few years ago and found that air pollutants inside are far greater than the ones outside, which consists of car exaust, refinery stacks, ect. Just something to think about. They make air friendly cleaning agents now and safe carpet glue, ect...
In reference to the hepa filter answer above. Studies have shown that filters equipped with ionizing devices generate ground ozone, so If you do get a hepa filter (I use one for allergies), turn OFF the ionizing device.
For the quality of air, I do not know, However, just one will improve the quality af any body's personality!
