Answers:
Chlorine level probably got low. And in this warm water... WHAM! Keep shocking and double up on your tabs. Should get you through the heat wave.

The heatwave combined with probably a greater bather load ( more people in or in longer than usual) did you in. Your chlorine just got overwhelmed by the amount of organics in the pool water. Double up your normal weekly dose of shock and keep your chlorine residual at 3.0 until it's clear. Remember to clean out your filter, all that stuff has to go somewhere. Keep an eye out for any patches in the pool , similar to what you found in the skimmer and give them a brush to get it into the water column and expose that algae better to chlorine.
if your chlorine lever dropped or your pH or you didn't run your pump for a few day this is a good cause if you caught it in time then all you need to do is run to wallmart by the algae 10 should only need 1/3 -1/4 of it just matter how much green your pool is if it has already taken over then buy the super algae that is sold check your chlorine and pH level or take some of your water to a pool store and they can test it for you
make sure your filters is clean
and that their is no dirt that is on the bottom of your skimmer turn your skimmer over not the basket but the actually skimmer were your hose goes and see if their is any debree blocking it i had this problem before /
