How do I get rid of Duck Weed that is taking over in my garden pond ?
Answers:
I worked for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries for 4 years in their Aquatic Plant erradication division. There is a commercial chemical called REWARD which contains the active ingredient diaquat. Some places require a license to use this chemical and some only require a license if your body of water is connected to another navigatible waterway such as a river or stream. This chemical can be found at my local Lowe's, Walmart, and Home Depot but you will have to read the chemical labels to find it as REWARD is a commercial tradename. Possibly your state department of Wildlife would spray this for you if you call and ask. We used to do it if the landowner would buy the chemical. There is no other reliable method other than spraying with herbicide. For other annoying water plants 2-4-D will kill hyancinths and alligator weed, Roundup will kill water lettuce, cut grass, wild rice and to some degree it will kill duckweed, Reward(diaquat) will kill almost any surface plant in or out of the water, and finally the chemical SONAR will destroy subsurface weeds like hydrilla which clog boat props. Be sure to read the product labels and wear saftey equipment as required and obey all applicable laws.

the duck weed and the filter have no connection. Empty the pond, clean it, refill and start over with desired species.
