"How To Read the Bible For All It's Worth"?
Have you read this book on biblical exegetics, "How To Read the Bible For All It's Worth" by Gordon D. Fee and Douglas Stuart? If so, did/do you find it helpful in your reading of the Scriptures, and is it worth the money?
I came into a financial windfall recently, and have been considering buying this book for awhile now. I really want to grow in my knowledge of God's holy, inspired Word, and grow closer to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, through biblical exegetics. I want to become "a workman approved..."
Two other questions I have.
1. What is the purpose of learning to read the Bible exegetically?
2. How long does it take for a person to become good at reading the Bible exegetically, not just for the individual's sake, but also to be able to share God's Word when evangelizing?

Bible study takes a life time, after all, how can mortal man fully know the mind of God.
Try starting off every Bible reading session with a prayer to God for help, and end the prayer to him, through our mediator Christ Jesus, after all the way to the Father is through the Son.
Jesus himself taught us that in the model prayer at Matthew 6:9-15! Now seeing you are on the garden site...got any garden questions to go with the God questions?

If you feel that the book will be helpful, by all means, buy it. Breaking the scripture down into its principals is really the only way to read it. You can become good at the sections you begin with immediately. But as to general knowledge, I would guess it'd take a couple of years. at least for me.....
Well, I dont really know what that exegetically stuff means..so I wont have any comment on it.
But, I found out that, to me, I got the entire bible on CD and when ever I go anywhere that involves a long distance, of an hour or more, I pop one of those in, and listen to my hearts content!! i learn things, each time, by hearing the World.
Some people I know, have the CDs and follow along with the Book, so they reinforce thier knowledge, By hearing and seeing the Word.
Just reading every day, will eventually reinforce your knowledge as you start to memorize certain passages, every time, and the Holy Spirit will bring newness to the scriptures every time you read it, because certain things will "pop out" at you at this reading or the next, as you need, and the Holy Spirit reveals to you, each time.
When ever I put the Book down for awhile, (maybe amonth or two), then pick it up again, its like I am reading a completely alien book to me...sheesh!! I am competely lost and everything looks NEW like I have never read it evcer before!! (must be only me, I dont know why, but it does). I can, with the Holy Spirit, give examples of this and that, and bring out a lot of scriptures, when I discuss something, but, to read them as I take time out for other things and then get back to the Book... Its like I am picking it up for the first time...(Yea, that really bothers me when I do this, because I love listening to the Bible more than reading it...)..

The purpose of learning to read the Bible exegetically is so one can critically evalauate or interpret the text. This is useful for discernment in light of the text's contextual basis. I have Dr. Fee's book and several others he has authored and have found him to be an understandable expert in this area. This endeavor will stretch you in many ways as you learn to evaluate the sources for the biblical manuscripts you are reading. One of the advantages to learning from "How to Read the Bible For All It's Worth" is that the author does not assume a prior knowledge of Greek or Hebrew and writes in a way that is understandable. Enjoy the process of learning. It will help you share God's Word regardless of whether you are an expert or not. Blessings!!
