How do you tell if the stone in a ring a cz or a diamond?

Diamonds almost always have impurities, i.e. small imperfections. As a first check get a x10 magnifier and look at the stone to see if there are any small specs, usually showing as tiny black bits. If you can see these then it is very likely you have a diamond. However the most clean of diamonds (very rare to find) will have no specs, so this is not a foolproof check but covers 99% of cases.
Another check is colour. Over 90% of diamonds sold for rings are not pure white (CZ is pure white). Check your stone against a known CZ stone and see if it is slightly duller or a very very slight hint of yellow. If it does have a very slight yellow compared with CZ then it is most likely a diamond - note the difference will be small but you should notice in clear daylight. Note again that this is not a foolproof check but it is another method to check.
Finally you can take your stone to a reputable jeweller that specialises in diamonds, but I would emphasise reputable, some may try to mislead you or simply don't know themselves and are not equipped or qualified to give advice.

diamonds can cut glass, so if your really confident, i would try it with a little piece of glass.

Well just hit it with a stone or try to melt it.... real dimond are far harder then stones and have high melting point (though the shine of the diamond may be faded if u treat it like this)
The only way is to get an expert to look at it through a jewel glass. Cz will also cut glass. Depending on the quality of cz some jewelers have trouble telling one from the other.

here's something interesting. a cubic zirconia is actually mor epleasing to the eye than a diamond. the quality of diamonds is based on how well the stone scatters light- that is what determines how brilliant a diamond is. cubic zirconias actually scatter light far better than diamonds and are thus more pleasing to the eye. the value of diamonds is completely artificial. De Beers essentially has monopolized the diamond industry and manipulated consumers into thinking that naturally mined diamonds are actually worth more than cubic zirconias and synthetically produced diamonds. A 1-carat diamond stone can cost more than 3,000 dollars. An industrial diamond used for glass cutting or other manufacturing tasks is worth less than 10 dollars. This artificial value of the diamond is due to the fact that the De Beers company has fooled most consumers into believing that natural diamonds are purer and shine more brilliantly thatn cubic zirconias- which is not true. They also contend that one's true love can only be conveyed by buying their loved one an expensive diamond- the De Beers company is effectively putting their own price on YOUR relationship- something only you can do (and something which should not involve any dollar amount) In fact, naturally mined diamonds contain more impurities than cubic zirconias and diamonds synthetically prepared ina laboratory. If I were you, I'd be glad to have a cubic zirconia. I know this had nothing to do with your question- but it's interesting to know.
although a cz is meant to be able to cut glass as well as a diamond, they are a little duller than a diamond and they are not set so well in the mount that they are in
