How do I clean pigeon shxx?

Pigeons have left droppings all over my roof. How do I clean the mess safely (I heard it can cause diseases!) and efficiently?

Answers:
Water (from a hose or a bucket) and a cheap sponge or soft brush. You can wear rubber gloves, too, if you're worried.
