Touch something only once. ie. mail - open it, read it, take action, file away or put in garabage can.
You can't hold onto to everything. the famous saying, someone junk is someone elses treasure - is true. Get rid of it if you don't use it.

Id say,,start by getting your everyday housework out of the way,,then,,take one room at a time.Pick up an item & say where does it go,,& put it there.Have boxes,,one for stuff that you dont want & keep adding to it,,(makes good for a yardsale or charity.)Have a box or trashcan for stuff that is simply to be tossed. Store items that you are not using regularly in a certain area.,,like an attic. Boxes with lids are great,,like old xerox paper boxes work great.I start by sorting things,,then later go back & eliminate out of what is sorted.In this new house we moved to,,I noticed that 5 extra rooms have collected stuff,,Im now trying to put all the extra stuff in one room,,the attic.Just keep working at it,,even a little each day & you will begin to see things unclutter.
