I use Ortho Wasp spray, it is very effective and will shoot up to a distance of about 8 feet.

Thousands? You may need professional help if you really have that many.
Otherwise buy a can of Raid wasp spray - I think it allows you to stand about 20 feet away and still reach the nest.
they sell this spray at home depot. look in the sections for all the insect killing stuff. its a spray can that shoots like 20 feet. my dad bought like 2 cans last year and killed the entire wasp population in my town!! lol. exageration. but it works wonders. it kills them instantly on contact.
When I bought my house, there was a small pool-house in the back that the previous owners built (very poorly). It was all rotten and nasty because they had a hot tub in it and the steam just dry rotted the wood.
Yellow-jackets took up residence and I tried RAID and other sprays. They all worked well as a temporary solution. Then, I went to ACE Hardware and bought their Wasp and Bee spray. It worked far better than Raid and the other stuff I tried.
I don't remember what it was called exactly, but it was in a plain white spray can with the red ACE logo and black lettering. It looked like really cheap crap, but it worked unbelievably well.
Oh yeah, I also went back and sprayed in all their little burrowed holes. Ever since using that stuff, I didn't have a problem all the way up until I knocked that pool-house down about a year later.
Don't buy those expensive wasp sprays when you can use Dawn dish washing liquid.That's right a capfull of Dawn(mixed with water)in a spray bottle, or my weapon of choice,a Supersoaker water gun will kill any wasp or bees your having a problem with!Just give it a try it'll make a believer out of you!
