do you own or rent your house, if you rent is your landlord a jerk?

Answers:
When we were renters years ago, we sometimes didn't like our landlords. Having been home owners for a long time now, I can't imagine having somebody else live in my house! I would be SO edgy and would NOT want them to have animals, etc. Think how you would feel if it belonged to you and you were renting it to somebody else. Or... let's say you are renting it, and then you sublet to another person, and take an extended vacation. You come back, and they have trashed the place, or they have never paid you the rent money.... you have to spend a lot of money to clean it up and pay the back rent, so your landlord won't sue you.. all because somebody ELSE wanted to be a lazy slob.

If you put yourself in another person's place, sometimes it helps you understand why they sometimes act like a jerk.

Yes most of them are....
The screening process should be just as important to the renter also.
Never rent in the same building the owner lives.
Heres a first. Both is my answer to your question. I am a rental property owner. I have 4 houses, no let me correct that, I have 3 houses and 1 home. I have been in the rental business for many years and have seen many unbelievable things from both sides, the landlord which I am and the tenant. As a landlord I have heard many stories from tenants about some of the apts. they have looked at. It is really unbelievable how some landlords keep their apts. and expect people to rent them. I mean filth, missing water handles, ceiling falling down, clogged drains and bugs just to mention a few. No hot water and a bad heat system is also always on the top of the list. The owners of such properties grab the rents and run with it. Nothing gets improved or done for the tenants or just for the house. We call these type of people "slumlords". Their exact attitude is "why fix it when they will break it anyway", meaning the tenants. These slumlords have no pride in their ownership and some simply use them as a tax deduction. Yes, finding the right apt. can be a tenants true nightmare and unfortunately most of the "bad houses" are camouflaged so that you don't know until move in time. I have seen this for myself. As far as them being a jerk, I don't think the wording is quite right, but yes, definiately, I know they can be jerks. It's an attitude most get from just not caring. NOW, on the other side of the coin, as I said, I am a landlord. I have 2 single family houses and 1 - 3 apt. house. My husband and I take much pride in our properties and believe that upkeep is everything. Our tenants sign a contract and within that contract it states that we must be notified immediately of any type of failures so we can repair whatever immediately. Our houses are A+ and we do want to keep them that way. Four months ago we rented to a family who absolutely trashed a house. We have so far $8000.00 in damages. Sounds unbelievable but you would be surprised how fast new entrance doors, storm doors, faucets, carpeting, paints, ceiling lights and so much more add up. I am still working on the paper-work for Court. We try not to let this effect us and keep on going but it surely isn't easy when you see your house destroyed by tenants with good paying jobs and work for the City.(References) If I became highly discouraged would that make me a jerk because I will try to be stricter next time?
