How can I get rid of a nest of yellow jackets nest in the ground [thousands of them]?

it could be very dangerous to attempt to do this yourself. You should call in a professional exterminator

The foaming type of bug spray works great!
The foam keeps them from flying to attack you and you can spray from 15 feet away!

I would call a pest control company, this is not a job for an ordinary person.
to get rid of a bunch of bees, you have to get them all at once, like in the morning when none of them are out, and just soak their hive with spray and then cover the opening so that they suffocate
Well after dark, pour kerosens or light-weight oil down the hole. It will take more than one application, and quite a bit of oil, but it will kill them.
yellow jackets can swarm and can kill, seriously. My neighbor had work done by a company and they woke a nest with a bobcat, the man in the machine was swarmed and they had to pull him into a pond to get the things off, he was rushed to a hospital. I would really consider getting an exterminator for this job.
I GOT RID OF THEM BY--MAKING A BUCKET OF MUD AND SEVIN DUST, GOING OUT IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT WITH A LIGHT AND POURING SEVIN IN THE HOLE AND QUICKLY SEALING IT WITH MUD AND RAN LIKE A DEER. ALSO SPRINKLED SEVIN AROUND AND ON TOP OF THE WET MUD.
wait until it is dark and cool and pour about 2 cups of gas in the hole and go to bed. The fumes will kill them all in about one minute. For safety reasons don't light the gas.
