For home air conditioners - should the exhaust be closed or open?

im not an expert but i think it should be open
If it closed the air inside your home will be cooled, if it is open the outside air is being brought in and it may bring in smells from outside and I believe the conditioner will have to work alot harder to cool the air comming in.
