Why does grass only smell when its cut?

You could pull handfuls from the ground but that will never alter the smell, but with a lawn mower...totally different!!

Answers:
Because when it's damaged it's defence mechanism is to let off a smell to warn that it is, in fact, slightly poisonous. I'm sure many will have observed a cat or dog eating a small amount of grass when it's feeling under par. The animal is usually then sick. Whether or not animals smell grass in the same way as we do doesn't matter. I personally love the sweet smell of freshly mown grass.
Mowing a lawn involves millions of blades of grass so you can't fail to detect the smell as stronger. A well maintained lawn will be cut near the sweeter tips of the blade hence the agreeable smell.

It smells all the time, just when its cut it releases more odor into the air. I like the smell.
Because the smell comes from the juice with in the top part of the leaves. So when you cut off the top, you release the water within the plant and that gives off that natural smell of fresh lawn being cut.
when you cut it-the magical grass faries-sprinkle pixie dust on it that makes it smell good and brings you good luck
Grass (or any other plant or herb) releases its fragrance when it is cut because before it is cut, it is contained much like your skin contains your insides. Open that "skin" and you can smell it!
Thats the smell off grassy death. The smell you all enjoy so much is the smell of a thousand decapitated blades of grass!
Every creatures will release smells if it is cut. The liquids inside vapourises into air and creats smells or fragrance. Even when U pull the grass from the ground that will also smell but so little that U have to take your nose near the cut grass. The grass mixes with air at high speed as the lawn mower cuts the grass and also volume of cut grass also a factor
haven't a clue but it plays havoc with my hay fever
the chlorophyll ("green juice") is released - when it vaporises , creates odour.
