Boric acid powder will work and is harmless to people.
Put bay leaves around - ants don't like bay leaves.

Okay, this might sound really odd--try sprinkling powdered CINNAMON in the areas where you thinks ants might be. The oil in cinnamon irritates their feet (I've heard) and they will leave.
You can also sponge down your kitchen countertops with Vinegar.
If you haven't got any ant powder try talk.

Vacume and vacume some more....some times borax works really well but test it on a spot on the carpet / flooring that doesn't show first to see if it will ruin it. try to put out ant traps were no small children or pets can get them. Call an exterminator if all els fails.
The best way is to get a spray called nipon,you can get it from most chemists or wilkos,its about £2.00 a can but its the best stuff ive come across.

Ants always follow clearly defined trails, so follow the line back to where it enters your home. Then put down some ant powder, which you can buy almost anywhere along the trail and voila, the problem will be solved almost instantly. Once their supply line has been broken like that they wont usually come back unless they coincidentally find an alternative route.
I admire ants. I live on the second floor of a block of flats and they found their way from the grass outside, up a flight of conscrete steps and under the corner of my front door along the hall into my kitchen! I really hate killing anything but even an ardant animal lover like myself isn't going to put up with an army of ants in my home.
Your ants are looking for food. If they find it then they will swarm there to carry it back to their home. Just don't leave any food out for them !
Find out where the ants are coming from and pour boiling water on them .
If you can't find them kill any you find but leave them for the live ants to take home because a few of them have died they should stop coming back.
Put a drop of Nippon down where it can not be accessed by chilren or pets. The ants take it back to the nest and this then iradicates the whole colony.
