What can I use to remove smoke smell from a house/room?

The smell is overpowering. I do not want to cover it up but remove it so that it doesn't get into clothes.

Answers:
Few odors are more odious, especially to non- and reformed smokers, than lingering cigarette smoke. Whether your goal is to get healthy or to get a loved one off your back, it's easy to keep your home from smelling like the local roadhouse. Just throw open your windows and try out one or more of these easy tricks.

Steps:
1. Set small bowls of vinegar, pine-scented cleaner or activated charcoal around the room. If your home has young children or pets, place the bowls well out of reach. Close off the room overnight.

2. Spritz your favorite perfume or cologne on a cold light bulb. When the light is turned on, the warmed scent will fill the room.

3. Place small items (such as gloves, a wool hat or a small pillow) in a zippered plastic bag with a couple of fabric-softener sheets. Leave overnight.

4. Fill ashtrays with cat litter to extinguish cigarettes and capture the odor.

5. Sprinkle baking soda liberally on carpets, rugs and upholstery around the room. Let it sit overnight. Vacuum.

6. Soak a rag or a dish towel in vinegar, wring out the excess and wave it around the room for a minute or two.

Overall Tips:
Launder washable items, including curtains, pillows and slipcovers, for best odor removal.

Arm & Hammer carpet powder
Open the windows and spread Arm & Hammer carpet powder all around. I use the kind for eliminating pet odors- wait about 20 minutes and vacuum. This works really well. Also, I like to use the Febreze neutralizer for areas that you can't vacuum, like big throw pillows or sofas.

LET IT AIR OUT FOR A YEAR, USE FREBREEZE EVERYDAY AND NIGHT. GOOD LUCK!!
smoke outside or stop smoking!! (this is from a smoker) OUST in the uk
use room spray
Are you talking about from a previous smoker or something to use everyday? My step-mother is allergic to cigarette smoke and they moved to a house where the previous owners were heavy smokers. They repainted every room and replaced any carpets (it was mostly wood floors). The smell embeds itself into the walls and carpet so there's not much you can do for everyday smoking.
Extensive smoke damage (from fire) is repaired by sealing the walls/woodwork with a shellac based primer/sealer like BIN then repainting.

Febreze works OK for minor smoke smells, but an Ozone generator will do the job much more quickly and get the smell out of carpets
i use renuzit super odor neurtalizer citrus sunburst flavor.. it is in spray form. and if you live in the usa you can get it at wal- mart or dollar general stores. cheap! they also say vinegar on a damp towel..unfold a towel after you have dampened it w/ water and vinegar and just kinda walk around your room with it opened up and it does "trap" alot of the odors. to keep it out of clothes... well...that one is tuff. i smoke so if you find out that answer...let me know.. but the renuzit can be sprayed on some clothes as well and it does work, but not all fabrics will like it! it says "lightly mist fabrics ...for those fabrics which may waterspot, test in an inconspicuous area first..not recommended for leather or silk. www.renuzit.com can't hurt to try it.
the best way is to take a clothe, wet it with vinegar and leave it in a corner, it sucks the smell of smoke right out of the room! tried, tested and true!
lemon juice
If you have carpets, couches, or anything fabric, then use a carpet cleaner to get the smell out of that. If you don't have a lot of fabric then i recommend opening all the windows in the house, using a deodorizer, not a smell masker in each room of your house. Febreeze does not work. it is a smell masker and all it does is gets rid of the smell for a few hours. Clean every inch of the house and then wait for the smell to go away
If i'm honest, opening the windows and leaving them open on a windy day does the best thing, although you kind of have to stay in the house too!
open the window and don't smoke in there. you can use moth balls and use baking soda nad burn candles
