If you are talking about during the WASH cycle (For Aggitation) and not the RINSE cycle. Then It could be the wigwag gear it could be the transmission or the Dog ear (I think that one) Hopefully you have an older washer with the metal transmission and not a newer one with the plastic transmission

You didn't say what kind of a washing machine you had, most machines only spin one way, front loading ones spin both ways.
why are you trying to reverse the spin...all washing machines spin clockwise, period!
Many possible causes.
Most common is overloading the machine.
Could also be bad drive ears or a bad wig-wag or a number of other problems.
Why are people saying most washing machines only spin one way? Has anybody heard of the agitation cycle? lol. Yeah.. they spin spin.. just one way., but when they agitate, they move forward and reverse?! At least the ones I've owned and the ones we work on in our apartment complexes.
Most common problems are the motor coupler and lid switches. However, if it does spin one way and not the other, I'd guess it'd be the actual drive motor itself.
I believe the driver motor would need to be replaced. It depends on the make and model. Different washing machines work in different ways - well they're all similar but some have one component while others do not.
It could also be a specific gear, but most even do it yourself people don't mess with those - but call a technician.
However, ... depending on the type of machine and pricing, it's possible a new machine may be cheaper. It all depends. I'd call in the model number to a repair place to see what the cost on the motor would be - and cost of installation if you cannot do it yourself.
