flamica countertops are alot cheaper and are easy to keep clean. Tile is my favorite looks wise. But if you can afford it marble is the prettiest and its also very easy to keep clean.And if you do scratch it you can buff out the scratches

Cost will be your driving factor. The most inexpensive option is always formica. The laminate industry has come a long way with options and you can easily get some that looks very much like stone, if that's the look you're going for.
Tile is good for things like bathrooms, but the variation in height of grout lines makes it difficult to work on sometimes. It's durable and if you chip a tile, it's relatively easy to repair/replace. But the grout is porous and can harbor germs, so sealing is crucial which translates to maintenance.
Granite is coming more into the building industry but acidic foods, like lemons, can etch the surface so you'll always have to be careful with it. It's beautiful, but can be a pain.
Otherwise, I recommend Silestone. It's a superior product to marble and granite for countertops, is non-porous and harder than most other countertop materials you'll find. It's real stone (quartz) and as such, you'll pay a little more for it. But nothing beats real stone. Has a variety of colors, too.
Granite is not porous, it is hard to scratch and it is very easy to keep clean. If it it installed correctly, it isn't likely to crack. It come is lots of colors and natural patterns.
We chose a combination. Corian on the cabinet tops and granite for the island. It is a big island and most of the food prep is done there and the cooktop is in the middle of one side. My wife would not have anything else.
