how do you burn a wood log in a fireplace?

I even added those sticks that are supposed to help the log burn but they just burn by themselves and the log doesn't catch fire.

Teepee or pyramid designs have always been frustrating to me (it nearly always tips over the wrong way), I find the log cabin design (crudely illustrated in the upper left corner) to be very efficient... criss crossing layers of smaller sticks with a little space between each stick for air and flame to get between. If you are using the Fat-Wood, mix just a few of those with other sticks. I collect dry 2x4 scraps and split them down into sticks for this purpose. I wouldn't recommend burning pine lumber as the main fuel, but starting with that can be very helpful.

I recommend that you use gasoline. Very, very carefully.

Unless you are using one of the self-lighting firplace logs you will need more than 1 log for a fire. The first step is to have some smaller peices of wood to get going first. Use cumpled up newspaper then put the small wood on top. Shove one or two of those sticks in with the rest.
After that gets going add some larger pieces but not too large. Once the fire is hot you can start add bigger logs. You need at least 3 logs in the fire to keep it going. The wood should dry and seasoned. Meaning that it should have been cut and split for at least 1 year.
those sticks are kindling and you need a fair amount of them to get the fire started. take 3 DRY (!!very very important)relatively small logs and make a pyramid out of them in the opening at the bottom of this pyramid put the kindling and light it. It may still take a few tries but eventually it should light. Another useful item is a fire starter which is a Dixie cup filled with sawdust and glue with a wick in it - it's almost guaranteed to start a fire and reduces the amount of kindling needed
