Does anyone know what SERVICE (army, navy, etc.) used to stamp their belongings, how do i find out if its my pa

I have an old dresser that my mother gave to me and said it used to be my grandpa's I never seen. He passed away before I was born. I found a stamp or indent that reads"U.S. 01-6421-GS-46 Would this be a number for the military?? HELP!

This question has gone four days without an answer. I have done several searches and have not turned up any definitive information. My guess is that the piece was government owned. I am also guessing that "GS-46" might be a branch of the General Services Administration, which is the procurement arm of the federal government. I wish I could be of more help.

If it were mine, I would take digital photos of the piece and the identifying marks and take them to local antique shops. Many shop owners are very knowledgable and if they don't know the answer, they can often point you in the right direction.

Good luck with your search for information.
