What is the best way to transplant miniature cacti? What's the best soil to use?

We bought some miniature cacti at a farmers market for our boys to take care of. They have been blossoming and growing alot this summer and need to be transplanted. Any advice?

Answers:
Round cacti should have a third their diameter between the plant and the edges of the pot. Tall growing cacti should be in a pot half their height (if cacti 6in tall use 3in pot) It is always best to transplant in the spring, before their growing season. If you transplant now, you run the risk of the roots not taking hold in the new soil, and your plants could die of root rot as they go dormant in the winter. You can get cacti dirt at any Wal-mart.

Other answers:
Only repot if root bound. Cactus grow slow and can stay in there pots quite awhile. Only go one pot size larger and use a good quality cactus mix.

I would only re pot cacti if the roots were coming out thru the bottom. They can stay in a pot for quite some time. Transplant with cactus mix available at most nurseries and the garden department of Home Depot. Just follow the instructions on the bag.
