Will a cat go after a rat, or just a mouse? I see the rat, lots of cats, but no effort to get it.?

Our neighborhood is across from a open field and they are putting a new building there. When they disturb the ground, the rats run over here. They also like the berries on a tree. I have a dog, and don't know the best way to get the rat. Help me...... Ok, you can be funny too, if you want......

Answers:
a lot of wild rats are disease carriers that could be why the cats arent going after them i dont think their size has anything to do with it cause my cat has went after adult rabbits before. I would probably call pest control they have the equipment to catch pesky rodants. I wouldnt let your dog out alone incase one of those rats were to bite him or her you could have problems then and puting poison out is dangerous cause the cats or your dog could get into it. your best bet would call an exterminator or even animal control.
good luck!!

Other answers:
Cats are naturally selfish and they won't go to catch a rat that might hurt them.
I have a dog myself, and this little thing is a natural born killer of rats, maybe cause he almost never sees other dogs or have contact with other animals, so anything he sees, he goes after it.
My dog is a mix between a poodle and this chubby Chinese dogs which I can't remember the name. So, A DOG.

Most domestic cats don't chase mice much any more, let alone rats (unless they are up fpr a challenge in particular). Since people keep them fed, they have gotten lazy and many times only get mice etc. that are trapped or not moving fast. Outdoor cats on the other hand still chase them cuz they are more likely fed less in order to maintain pest control.
get some rat poison. get them in the rat food form. the rats will die from eating it. make sure you wash your hands thoroughly afterwards because i heard that you can get diabetes if it gets on your food. children are at a higher risk of getting it than an adult if they consume it by accident
Some dogs are bred to catch rats.
