how do i remove rust from my bbq hotplate?

Use a rust killer which you can by in most D.I.Y stores. and Halfords and car shops. I use it all the time on my old Ford Van. there are some good products on the market that turns the rust into an undercoat.
Just use a wire brush clean the loose surface rust of paint on a rust killer then paint with a heat resistant paint, like used on car exhausts
