Is there a safe way to keep a 2 year olds bedroom cool?

We have no air conditioning here. We live in N.Y military housing and they don't have a.c.'s in them. We can't put one in the kids bedroom because the windows aren't double windows. Are the window fans safe? Would he put his finger in it? Do they have a guard over the fan? I can't put a regular fan in his room, because I don't trust him with it.

Answers:
Well i have a two year old sister and i know that they will put there fingers in the fan. You could get a ceiling fan (they work as good as regurlar ones.) The window fan would be good if there was a guard over it

Other answers:
They have freestanding A/C units and Lowes, Home Depot etc... but they cost more than window units. You just have to change a drip pan in the bottom of the unit.

a high open window with a tight screen and lock bolted in! hahaha
He might try to put his fingers into the fan, unless you get one that has a really small grate. You could try getting a little fan, the kind that clips onto a table or desk, then just clip it up somewhere above his bed where he can't reach it, but it can still blow on him.
Try one of those regular house fans that have a cage over it, A child's finger wouldn't be able to fit in it either.
If you put a fan in his room and put it up on a dresser there should be no reason why he would be able to get to it. Keep in mind a 2 year old is not very tall or very big for that matter.
1. You could use a non-window Air Conditioner, but like the freestanding fan, you have to be concerned with him trying to play with it.

2. You can use a windows fan, but get a REAL window fan, not just a box fan that can fit in a window, this will ensure it fits snuggly and can't be pulled out or pulled down by the child.

3. A ceiling fan helps keep a room cool, and you can be sure he won't be able to reach it.
I use a small desktop fan. They have smaller grates. My 16 MO does not have any problems with messing with it. I do not recommend the window fans because they can be pushed out too easy, either by the child or a burglar.
It sounds like installing a ceiling fan is out because it's military housing, unless you can get them to do it. I would certainly ask. If you go with a regular fan you could mount on of those tv brackets to the wall and use racheting tie downs (for a good tight hold) to mount the fan to the bracket. This way you can mount it out of his reach and when it's time to move, you just have a few holes to fill in on the wall. Try to get the bracket mounted into a stud in the wall or use very sturdy wall anchors.
